Santa Train

This past weekend we took the boys up to Walkerville to ride the "Santa Train".  Santa came by briefly to chat with the boys and girls and they were able to tell him their wish list.

AJ asked for so many things I can't remember what he's getting.

 Overall, good trip!!

Port Discovery!

Last weekend the boys cashed in their 'Golden Ticket' that Uncle Jon and Aunt Cori gave them for their birthdays.  The ticket included their first REAL train ride on the Amtrak from DC to Baltimore and admission to Port Discovery, an interactive children's museum.  We enjoyed a brief lunch at Union Station before boarding!!

It was a long day but the boys had a BLAST.  The entire train ride they squealed with excitement as we  switched tracks, went through tunnels, and of course, when the conductor came to punch their ticket.

Port Discovery was great.  There was lots to keep them entertained and active.  Trains, water play, soccer, giant playground, dying yawn (oops, I meant yarn), and playing with puppet.

A donut at Penn Station and riding in the dinning car on the trip home rounded out our fun day.  AJ passed out the moment we left DC.

Thank you Uncle Jon and Aunt Cori.  This was a memorable adventure they will never forget!!!

National Christmas Tree

Today we took the boys to go see the National Christmas Tree!  This trip was much better than my venture last year but they enjoyed it.  And of course, their favorite part of the day was riding the metro!

Spied Santa through the window on his break - not sure what is in his 'coffee cup' ;-)

Ellicott City Train Museum

This past weekend we took the boys to the B&O Railroad museum in Ellicott City!  This is the oldest train station in all of America.

Thomas wanted to ring the bell (Ben & AJ weren't having it)

 Model trains - Thomas style!

They had a massive lego train display.  They had started working on this in August!

More N-Guage

Thomas keeping busy by running in and out of doorways....

It wouldn't be a Sinclair outing with at least a little 'treat' for the boys.  Ben claimed it was his favorite day EVER (he says this whenever he is given any sort of 'gift')

Looking forward to coming back again soon!

Autism Update

Phew, what a month May has been!  Last week I was up at Kennedy Krieger for appointments for both Thomas & Ben.

Not much new with Thomas... he is still delayed for gross motor and receptive language, but he is doing good with fine motor (scoring above his age group!) though his does have nice social interaction skills.  Thomas is now 14 months old, cruising nicely, and eager to walk.  He still receives Physical Therapy weekly.  I hope he is walking next month!

Thomas with his exceptional fine motor, writing and drawing!

Ben was seen by a speech pathologist and developmental pediatrician at Kennedy Krieger for a full evaluation.  Last May I had put Ben on the waiting list (when we were awaiting a diagnosis and I was eagerly calling every specialist to get on any wait list I could).  Ben's name cam up this Spring and I scheduled the appointment - I figured it couldn't hurt to have "the best" evaluate him for one more opinion.  Plus, I was still struggling with the mixed diagnosis's of Aspergers from the psychologists and developmental delay from the developmental pediatrician.  Just two weeks prior to this appointment Ben saw his developmental pediatrician who did say that after a year of treatment she believed Ben to be on the spectrum with the diagnosis of Aspergers.  So this was three in agreement (developmental psychologist, school psychologist, and developmental pediatrician).  In any event, I still wanted to see what Kennedy Krieger had to say.  After several hours of intense testing and countless forms, paperwork, and parental feedback we had our answer.  Their diagnosis was PDD-NOS (pervasive development disorder, not otherwise specified) which is an Autism Spectrum Disorder.  The nuances between someone diagnosed with PPD-NOS vs Aspergers is slight - both are on the high functioning end of the spectrum with little communication delay.  I still feel though Ben should have the Aspergers classification (to note that Aspergers will go away completely in the DSM-V and all children on the spectrum will just be classified as ASD) but I was still relieved to know that everyone was all on the same page with him being on the spectrum.  I have read that many children diagnosed with PDD-NOS later go on to receive the diagnosis of Aspergers as well.  Ben will have a follow up appointment in Baltimore in 6 months to meet with a neurologist and psychologist.

The developmental pediatrician at Kennedy Krieger also gave Ben the diagnosis of anxiety (not atypical for someone on the spectrum) as he is always catastophizing things ("What will happen if I fall asleep in the car and you run off the road and hit a guardrail moma?!")  Really, what kid at age 4 worries about such things?!

Ben's interests still focus on trains, though most recently his focus has narrowed to the NY subway system.  He enjoys looking at the maps, building out the different lines (express and local trains) and is trying to learn each train route.  He also enjoys the DC metro train (specifically the red line) but we're trying to expand his interest to subway trains in general.

Riding the metro after Aunt Sarah's wedding.

Also, if anyone is looking for a good summer read, I just picked up "Look Me in the Eye" by John Elder Robinson (brother of Augusten Burroughs - author of Running With Scissors) which is a memoir of his life of growing up with Aspergers.  It's given me a new insight as to how Ben's brain may function and how he rationalizes things.

Celebrating our Fuzz

AJ turned three last week and like Ben he had a fun filled week of celebrations!

It started on Wednesday when he received his present after breakfast and exclaimed "I'm 4 like Benny!" and then a book reading by none other than moi at his preschool - The Little Red Caboose (he knows all the words by heart).

Thursday Marisa gave him a little extra attention by treating him to a trip to Target (his favorite) for cookies and an extra special present.

For his party on Saturday we decided to do just a family affair (when I asked him who he wanted to invite to his party he said "Ben" and "Thomas"). So that's what we did. We started our morning at Build A Bear workshop where Uncle Jon & Aunt Cori joined us. AJ had already pre determined he was getting a dog (which he brilliantly named "Doggie") and he was super excited to have his new pooch in hand. He chose a giggle sound which is so fitting for AJ.

Ben followed suit and get the exact same thing as AJ. Yay. His dog is named "B-ruff" and has a dog barking sound (the only way we can tell them apart, really!)

It was a fun adventure (even though they were terrified of the machines) and it was so cute to see them excited about their new pet.

We then hit up Chic-fil-a for lunch and finished with cake at Nana and Grandpas. AJ requested a 'Cars' themed party (I was happy to move on from Thomas) so thats what we gave him. Notice Nana's nice decorating skills!

Right as we were wrapping up Grandpa offered to take the boys on the metro to Union Station. Seth took Thomas home and the rest of us hoped in the car. They were eager to skip naps and brave the traffic. They had a great time (despite AJ's foot getting caught in the metro door) and enjoyed their first taxi ride through the city as well.

Needless to say, he slept well that night!

Thank you to everyone who made his week extra special!
